The Adult Equivalent of “The Dog Ate My Homework

“I’m too busy.” How many times a day do you say that? How many times a day do you hear another adult say it? We adults have adopted “I’m too busy” as the equivalent of “the dog ate my homework.” Both excuses are totally ridiculous. We all have the same amount of hours in a day. If you feel like you’re always “too busy,” then you probably don’t have a scheduling problem… you have a “yes” problem. In the book “The Best Yes” by Lysa TerKeurst, she says that we, especially women, say yes to a lot of good things, when we should really be saying yes to fewer great things. Let me be the one to give you permission right here, right now- IT IS OK TO SAY NO SOMETIMES. If saying no to something allows you to focus on the things that are truly important in your life (I’m talking about your health, people), then please know it is ok to do that. Here’s a good way to tell whether or not you should be saying yes to something- does saying yes to this thing put your spirit in a bad mood? Do you really want to say no, but think you’d be a bad person if you did? If you feel resentful toward the commitment, it’s not something you should be doing. When you say yes to something that isn’t your best yes, you’re actually taking that opportunity away from someone else. It’s not lack of time. It’s lack of priorities, lack of time management, lack of prioritization… When you have a clear direction and vision for your life, it’s easier to weed out the commitments that aren’t your best yes. If they’re not moving you closer to the vision you have for your life, then it’s a no. Take an inventory of your current commitments and evaluate each one. Is it helping you move in the direction of what you want for your life? If not, then it’s got to go. If you’re saying you don’t have time for something, what you’re really saying is you haven’t made it a priority. That’s some hard truth from the Bowens right there. We love you and we want you to live the very best life that God has called you to. When you’re ready to make your health a priority, we are here to support you in every way. Love you guys!
