The Trouble with Following Your Passion

There’s one lie we hear over and over again that is setting us all up for massive disappointment in our lives and keeping us from pursuing excellence and success in our lives. Any guesses? “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Yeah, we’re calling bull crap. Passion is an emotion. Remember when you first started dating your significant other? I bet you were full of butterflies and excitement all the time, right? That passion is an emotion… and the thing about emotions is that they fade over time. If you seek a job based on what you’re passionate about, that emotion for what you’re doing is bound to fade over time, and you’re setting yourself up big time if you think it’s not going to feel like work. Humans are designed to seek challenges. We need it to feel happy and fulfilled in our lives- in all areas. If you’re working in a job that’s not challenging you, you need to go find it. People call it grit. That stick-to-it-ness is what you have to fall in love with. Fall in love with the process. Fall in love with the journey. You’re going to find lots of things you’re interested in over time. The thing to get passionate about is the learning. The getting better over time. There is nothing like encountering problems or challenges along your life’s path and conquering them. That’s the feeling that needs to be cherished. Showing up every day and giving something your best, despite challenging circumstances, that’s the lesson we’re trying to impart on our boys as they head out into college and eventually the workforce. Embrace the suck. You will be better for it in the end. Rather than attempting to build a life that doesn’t ever feel like a challenge, choose things that challenge you daily and you will be stronger for it. Love you guys! Joy and Andrew
